About Sea Turtle Nesting Season

A sea turtle making its way to the beach to lay eggs during nesting seasonSea turtle nesting season is a yearly event that runs from the beginning of March through the end of October. There are several different types of sea turtles that journey to our area’s beaches, including leatherback, loggerhead, and green, but the loggerhead sea turtle is by far the most prevalent.

During nesting season, sea turtles emerge from the ocean and trek through the beach to find the perfect spot for their nest. Interestingly, they return to the same beach where they were hatched to lay their eggs. After making a nest, they lay their eggs. The sea turtles will make this journey several times, two weeks apart, as they lay three to five clutches of eggs during a single nesting season. Loggerhead sea turtle nests average between 65 and 100 eggs, so a single female can lay about 500 eggs during nesting season. Once the eggs are laid, temperature determines the sex of the turtle; warm nests lead to female turtles, while colder nests result in male turtles.

Safe & Respectful Sea Turtle Nesting Viewing

A sea turtle nesting area during nesting season in FloridaWitnessing the beauty of sea turtle nesting season is an unforgettable experience, but it is essential to be respectful to keep these creatures safe. When you spot a sea turtle nesting or hatching on our beaches, it’s essential to maintain a respectful distance. These creatures are in a vulnerable state during this critical period. Approaching them or disturbing their nests can be incredibly detrimental to their survival.

Sea turtle hatchlings use natural light cues to find their way to the ocean after hatching. Bright lights can disorient them, leading them away from the water and risking their survival. If you are visiting the beach at night, avoid using bright lights. Remember, these turtles have traveled miles across the ocean to lay their eggs, and it’s our responsibility to ensure their journey is as undisturbed as possible.
